Senior Advocate Iqbal M. Chagla, a towering figure in India’s legal profession, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 85. Known for his sharp legal acumen, unwavering dedication to justice, and impeccable integrity, Chagla leaves behind an illustrious legacy that has inspired generations of legal professionals.

Born on March 7, 1939, Chagla was the son of the legendary Indian jurist and former Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, M.C. Chagla, who served as the first permanent Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court from 1948 to 1958. Following in his father’s footsteps, Iqbal Chagla carved his own path, earning widespread respect in the legal fraternity. He completed his Masters in History and Law from Cambridge University before returning to Bombay to embark on his legal career.

Chagla’s legal journey began under the guidance of Kharshedji Hormasji Bhabha, a highly regarded figure in the legal profession. He was designated a Senior Advocate in 1979 at the age of 39, a testament to his exceptional legal capabilities. Over his distinguished career, Chagla served as the President of the Bombay Bar Association, one of India’s oldest associations of practicing lawyers, for multiple terms between 1990 and 1999. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in advocating against corruption in the judiciary, which led to significant reforms, including the resignation of several sitting judges.

Despite his immense contributions, Chagla notably declined offers of judgeship on three occasions—twice from the Bombay High Court and once from the Supreme Court. Legal experts widely acknowledged that, had he accepted, he would likely have ascended to the position of Chief Justice of India.

In a statement issued by the Bombay Bar Association, its secretary, Farhan Dubash, described Chagla as a "true champion of human rights and protector of the rule of law." The Association added: "Mr. I. M. Chagla’s contributions to the legal field are immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be remembered. His dedication, integrity, and excellence have inspired countless legal professionals."

Reflecting on his lasting influence, current Bombay Bar Association President Nitin Thakker remarked: "There are countless lawyers who are inspired by him; we had seen him from our younger days as lawyers. He was known to be a fair opponent and one can say that he worked till the end. He was appearing in the Dawoodi Bohra sect (dispute) until a few months ago."

Throughout his career, Chagla remained committed to justice and excellence in legal practice. The Association further stated: "His life and career were a testament to the highest ideals of the rule of law and justice."

Chagla’s contributions extended beyond his advocacy. He is remembered as a mentor and guiding force for numerous members of the legal community, earning respect for his fairness, intellect, and dedication. His advocacy in high-profile cases and his work in the Dawoodi Bohra sect dispute exemplified his dedication to the principles of justice.

The funeral service for Mr. Chagla will take place at 10:30 am on Monday, January 13, 2025, at the Worli Crematorium in Mumbai. The Bombay Bar Association extended its thoughts and prayers to his family during this difficult time.
